What do you love about your work?

There are so many aspects of my work that I love. First and foremost, I love helping small business owners learn the art of Shoestring Marketing. It wasn’t too long ago that I was a fledgling small business owner struggling to make ends meet each month. Once I discovered that there were hundreds of low-cost, high-impact marketing platforms, my business was never the same again. I discovered how to bring in a constant flow of traffic, how to convert that traffic to leads, and how to move those leads to happy clients and customers. But, what was so exciting is that I didn’t have to spend a dime in the process!

Since then, I have helped countless small business owners duplicate this same marketing process for their own small businesses. And, I love nothing more than receiving emails and phone calls from people who are moving from sad and struggling to savvy and successful. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you have helped someone overcome a roadblock that was keeping them from reaching their true potential.

Secondly, I love having my own business because it allows me immense flexibility for myself and for my family. Even though I often work long hours, I can pick and choose when to work. If I need to be at a school event, I simply alter my schedule and work in the evening. If I want to change my environment and work at the local Barnes and Noble, I just pack up my things and go. I love setting my own hours.

How did your life change after starting your business?

My life changed immensely after I started my own business. I had always worked a very traditional career path as a teacher, writer and speaker. For over fifteen years, I had a boss, deadlines and a dependable paycheck. Suddenly, I was the boss with no concrete deadlines and no paycheck. And, the icing on the cake was that I also had a very sick daughter and was deeply in debt. It was a very stressful transition to say the least! But, I took one day at a time and was determined to make it work. There were ups and downs, good days and bad, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

How has your business had an impact on your health and happiness?

When I first started Shoestring Marketing, I was working too many hours and didn’t have a healthy balance for the rest of my life. I truly believe that you must have a balanced life to be truly happy. At one point, I just decided that I was going to cut back on my work hours and begin focusing more on myself. I started eating more healthful foods, exercising, reading and taking Sundays off. (I was actually working seven days a week!) And, I must admit that my business didn’t suffer at all. In fact, that is when it “took off” so to speak and grew beyond my wildest dreams!

What tips would you give on managing a business and staying healthy?

I personally understand what it takes to make a small business successful. Without question, there are long hours, hard days and temporary defeats. But, I don’t know anyone who has become successful without juggling a variety of challenges along the way. In addition, you must make a conscious effort to balance the other aspects of your life: family, friends, health, spirit and hobbies. Balance won’t detract from the overall success of your business, it will only strengthen you to become a healthier and happier business owner. If you focus on taking one day at a time, picking yourself up when you fall and staying in balance, you will one day find yourself the happy owner of a successful small business!
